Next up for Art Meets Fashion wrap up is Krista Nielson, Resort line. If you aren't familiar with different types of lines, Resort usually consist of swim suits and lounge wear. Think rich people vacation wear. Overall I liked what she presented. Her swimming suits were creative but not too over the top. Its the type of swimming suit you wear to stand out in a good way.

She really isn't that blurry in real life.

Oct 16th Art Meets Fashion @ the Salt Lake Art Center. The second designer of the evening was Mckell Maddox from Project Runway fame. To me her line stood out as creative but wearable which equals sellable. Call me crazy but I like when designer keeps the buyer in mind. Alot of these pieces would look good on many body types. Also the line is cohesive with a followable color and pattern story. The line follow suite with the current trends, especially the use of sheers and mixed patterns.

In my notebook on the page cover with notes on FICE I drew a heart with community written inside.

FICE is a local clothing store located on 160 e 200 s. They are considered an Extreme Sport Boutique, but there is not a label that really does it justice. Their clothing is Fashion forward with a sense of athleticism and durability. Everything is meant for ruff and tough play while looking damn good! FICE also brags labels that have never been carried in the state.

While speaking to the store's manager Carrie Elderidge, its easy to see that the store is much more than just a fantastic clothing boutique, it's a gallery, a venue, and a meeting ground. Their current show on display is the work of Trevor Graves. He is a photographer from Portland Oregon whose photos highlight the character and emotion of people while they do extreme sports. FICE is a business with definite heart. A place that wants to inspire and motivate creativity in all its forms for the local SLC dwellers. And it's perfectly suitable to be on the bottom floor of the old Guthrie Bldg.

There are SO MANY! things I could say about FICE but I think its better if you just check out their sale going until the second week of January and talk to their amazing, lively, knowledgeable staff.

I know, I know. It's been far too long since we updated. I am going to try to do better.

I met Al at last's night's 337 Project afterparty at the SLC Art Center. His said he got his shirt in Japan. It's a very effective print—one that draws the viewer closer and closer to read its fine newsprint.

Artist Trent Alvey wouldn't tell me where she got this top, but she did say that she was drawn to it because it looked like something she could eat. I think the texture is very nice, and I really like the way it moved with her.

At every Fashion Stroll we look forward to local fashion treats. I count on liking what I see, but I'm always blown away by Lisa Defrance and Sonja Blackham's, SHIFT.

SHIFT is a local line that is created out of second hand items. They find their pieces at local thrift stores, a grandma's closet or get them from friends. At the beginning of each line, they talk about their vision and color scheme,etc. Then, they work separately to make their items. They piece together each look with part of each designer's look.

Sonja's main focus is on accessories.

Meanwhile, Lisa works on some of the large pieces.

Together, they make a fantastic design group and make equally amazing clothing.

When I spoke to Lisa and Sonja, we had a long conversation about the positive nature of fashion. The designers said they liked of clothes for the wearer -- not for the onlooker.

Personally, I like to look a certain way. It's not connected to what other people think. My personal requirements are silly and maybe not completely fashion forward but its what makes me feel attractive, happy and comfortable. That sort of "happy with myself" feeling is exactly what SHIFT is about. They design for every body type and made to make women feel good about clothes.

You can see SHIFT's new line at the upcoming fashion stroll. They are making fun dresses and shirts of dollies.

Also for the upcoming Fall season, Lisa and Sonja suggest putting some mustard yellow into your wardrobe.

It's official: cars are out of style. Bikes are now the most stylish way to get around, and Salt Lake City seems to see more fixies, roadies, and cruisers every day. It makes sense — our wide, straight streets make for simple rides almost anywhere around town.

Guthrie Bicycle Co. served downtown Salt Lake City in its historic building for around 100 years until the company consolidated its operation in Sugarhouse. Thankfully, the iconic Guthrie cyclist still rides above an increasingly anachronistic gun store below.

While Disorderly House has filled some of Downtown's bicycle needs, its fixed-gear focus is not perfect for all riders. Luckily, the SLC Bicycle Co. has opened on the corner of 200 South and 200 East for all of the cruiser, road, fixed-gear, and mountain bike fans out there.

Owner Brent Hulme says that while he can't replace Guthrie, he can fill the needs of Salt Lake's inner city cyclists, be they commuters from the 'burbs needing a spare inner tube for the ride home or Broadway hipsters looking for the newest gear.

SLC Bicycle Co. carries Swobo bikes and clothes, including one fixed-gear model with a galvenized finish. With a bike like that, you could be the envy of Critical Mass every month.

I always like it when bike accessories help riders look good both on and off their rides.

Brent told me that he wants SLC Bicycle Co. to be the "mom-and-pop bike store for everyone," and it looks like he's off to a great start.

House of Mount Everest is a small shop that specializes in clothing and gifts imported from Nepal and India.

It is a small store located by the NewGate mall in Ogden (36w Wall St). House of Mount Everest is stocked with embroidered hoodies and hand painted tanks and much more treats.

My favorite thing about stores like this is the use of hemp, bamboo etc.. in fabrics. Embellishments should be more than just a printed logo. I suggest adding pieces like the ones you can find at Mount Everest, Dancing Cranes, Ten thousand villages, DI! etc... to your wardrobe to diversify your style. Every time I get dress I try to represent more than one culture, lifestyle, genre, because I think fashion is funner that way.

Waring: This photo is really blurry and not shot on a super nice Canon like some of our other photos. Just letting you know.

Salt Lake has a new Baby Hipster Mecca. It is Club Sound - Wednesday night(+18). During my visit I realized that there was an age difference between the rest of the crowd and myself. I was the only person plugging my ears during the 5min Siren Loop.

Ian (SkingIan?) attended on Wed with his posse. He is wearing muted cool colors that would keep you crisp even when the summer sun is blaring down on you. His shirt is a tourist tank from Kmart that pictures wolves in their natural habitat. He is sporting a gray Sean Black hat and a duck tail hair do.

It was a good club night. There was actually enough room to dance but still a lot of people. Everyone was into the music and I didn't see anyone throw up.

During a hike to the upper emerald pools in Zion National Park, Dorothy caught my eye. She was another person like myself who was a little over dressed for a hike!

Dorothy is wearing a polyester floral print shirt that has a matching neck tie. She is also wearing aqua pants that perfectly match the color in her shirt. And to top off the aqua match party she has pebble earrings in the same color. When I asked her about why she chose the earrings she spoke to my soul.

"Everything has to match!"

Maybe matching is out, but I'm still a fan of matchymatchiness.

P.S. Dorthoy is from Provo, isn't everyone nowadays.

This is one that we meant to post a long time ago (I took the photo on April 18 and it's now the end of May) but between graduating, changing jobs, and some spring fever, I let it slip through the cracks. I also lost my notes on the photo, so it is sadly nameless.

Still, there are many things to admire about the outfit. Her skirt is a punky/gothy black, with straps and buckles. The contrasting top is lighthearted. It would work equally well at church on Sunday or at a bar the night before. Juxtaposed, they create a look I like to think of as Springtime Dungeon.

Elijah and Michael are Fashion Design students from Las Vegas. They traveled down from sin city yesterday to compete in Jared Gold's Fashion Design Throw Down. Elijah walked away with the grand prize ( $800 Janome Sewing Machine). He made a black silk and lace layered goth dress. Both Elijah and Michael are wearing outfits they tailored themselves. Elijah said that lately he has been wearing this style of collar everyday, and he just can't get enough. Michael has an ongoing purple theme with fun splashes of color. I love the trousers, they are pumped up with a fun shape but still offer a utilitarian pant.

This is another photo I took at the Smith's Market Place. Christine was shopping for snacks right before the playoff game she planned to watch from home. I am not really sure what team she was cheering, but its color is red. She is wearing skin tight red shirt and red tights, as well as long pink shorts. She revealed to me that she had on pink bloomers under the shorts as a homage to Michael Jordan's double-shorts days.

" I dont think anyone at work got the reference so I just tucked them in to my shorts."

I thought this outfit was enough out of the ordinary that she became photo worthy. DE-FENSE!

Intersection of Music and Fabric

Among the many things I do in life, I drive a truck all around the state for a University entity. Each place I go is interesting in its own right. I enjoy seeing the black roundy dog that yaps at you if you make the wrong turn to Tremonton. I stop occasionally at the latino markets and food establishments all around the very west side. Vernon makes you wonder about human relations and if I would go crazy in such a small town, etc... So I am now going to try to document these places even more so. I will try to occasionally post about the establisments in these rural communities. Specifically the fabric stores that sustain these communities.

Roosevelt is 2.5 hours out of SLC. It is about 45m west of Vernal. To reach this area you pass Kimball Junction, Heber and Duchesene. Like Duchesene, Roosevelt is surrounded and partially on Native American Reservation Land. Right off the main drag of Roosevelt is Shirley's Fabric and Music. Inside this store you will find a large selection of gingham and flannel

as well as the latest Baby Bash and Dolly Parton albums. OH! and if you need a strap for that guitar you can find it here as well. Now all that's missing is fudge. When I spoke to the owner she told me that in a small town like Roosevelt you have to have a dual purpose store to survive.

Shirely's is the only place to purchase these items other than the internet. I loved this visit to a staple of Roosevelt community.

Next is Payson, I didn't have any interest in this place but again I was taken back. Sorry kids for the lack of posts and the change of post format. We will eventually get back to street stuff. I haven't been as into it after all of the events of last month, bleh.

Our friends from Mode in Provo started with some of their classy, slightly staid looks, but there were also some more-daring outfits as well.

This outfit looks great for having lunch in the park.

This one is perfect for an extra on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Funny story: I bought this deadstock 70s Western shirt from Coal Umbrella on the night of the stroll. In a rush, Coal Umbrella asked if they could borrow it back for the fashion show and I reluctantly agreed.

··· THE MOST IMPORTANT PART ···

SLC Pomp's own Torres family designers have moved up from Barbie fashion to full-sized outfits.

Marcela made this outfit and dyed the material for the skirt herself.

This fancy raincoat is made from ripstop nylon that she got at Smith and Edwards. I envision the Vogue spread for this one taking place at the Tooele Munitions Depot.

Vests are appropriate for any occasion.

This one came a long way from where it was originally.

How many hats have you made this week?

Overall, I think the Spring Fashion Stroll was a big improvement over last December's. The outfits and vendors were good, and the weather was nice. I hope that the stroll's success might lead to better runway lighting...

At last weeks Raw Couture, we found an aundience member who seemed to be just the kind of person I expected at a fashion show. Jami is into the "classics." She wears classic memorable pieces of clothing that are new or vintage. She enjoys classic designers like Diane Von Furstenberg and Calvin Klein.

"You don't want one solid look. I don't want to look like just one store," she said.

Well said, Jami. It's about diversity and fun. For the event last week Jami tried to tone down her outfit with muted colors and solid outfit without print, but her style showed right through.

Her word was "effortless".

In other news, we are catching this event today:

This guy is playing at the Huka Lounge. His name is Kurt Reifler, and he is a New York musician who believes comfort is most important in show wear. We will report back to YOU to let you know more about him. He is also playing Saturday at Bruski's in Ogden. Our feature on Kurt will go up on Saturday. THATS RIGHT— AN EXTRA POST THIS WEEK.

And lastly, I got in a bike accident on Wednesday. I was biking from the Fashion Place Trax station to my parents' house. I rounded the corner and was going north on 300 West. There were UTA workers around in trucks and they were testing a new TRAX route. A train passed me heading southwest. I slowed down, but once it passed I began to pick up speed. As I crossed that very track (perpendicularly), something terrible happened. Somehow the track caught my tire. I don't know how, but it was like hitting a concrete wall and I fell to the ground onto my face. I don't know if I blacked out, but I heard some drivers stop and ask me if I was ok. My parents weren't answering their phone and I was spitting blood all over the road. My face and mouth were swollen and bleeding. Luckily, some unbelievably nice individuals got me out of the street and took me to my parents' house. During this time none of the UTA personnel "noticed" anything had happened. My rescuers told me this was not the first time this sticky track has claimed a biker. They said that they had talked to the UTA worker, but that they seemed uninterested. I want UTA to put a sign up that warns bikers of this danger and asks them to WALK their bikes across this track. I am not asking for them to pay for my medical bills, I just want there to be a sign or some other precaution taken to make this popular route safer for cyclists. Here is a link to my petition.

I am ok, lots of bruises, maybe-maybe a broken wrist, BUT my bike made it just fine. Wierd?

In our last post covering the SLCC Runway show I said that Jordan Halverston made the mistake of overshadowing his line with is own outfit. Well take a look, its fantastic.

Halverston, made this matching vest and slacks himself. Not only does it fit like a glove it also is made of quilted looking fabric in metallic pearl.

Raw Couture 08'

April 11th, Salt Lake Community College held a runway event showcasing their advanced fashion design students. Each student designed and sewed each of the outfits in their line that ranged from 3 - 6 outfits.

A while ago when I began working on my first installation (and still am) my mentor gave me the advice, "Do what you know". She said young artists try to start big by doing something that they really don't know anything about just to be edgey and it shows. In this show it seemed as though the students took that advice to heart. All of the items in the show were not particularly innovative or avant-garde, but they were sturdy and suited to students who are just starting to test the waters.

The show started with pieces from the Leonardo.

Krista Nielson

Jenny Vance, Floral Feminine dresses. The first outfit out gave me renewed hope for the rest of the show. She worked with silky floral prints to make feminine, clean dresses.

Mallory Bair, Leather. Mallory's use of leather was exciting to see in a student show. Her line had a simple class act look.

Katie Dodd, Swimwear. The truth is Katie Dodd's line of gold lame, stretch vinyl and spandex swimsuits were my favorite in the show. Not all of the designs were completely fresh but everything was fun and memorable. She wanted to stray away from the average bikini cuts and swimsuit prints and I think she succeeded. I liked her take on male swimwear and the 80's looking red and gold one piece.

Rebbecca Burgess, Mommy and Me. Cute levels were off the radar. Rebbecca designed a line of matching mommy daughter outfits. She also surprised us with a puppy companion. Although everything was sewn immaculately and it was very smart to bring adorable things on stage and she swept the competition, none of the pieces were original or eye catching.

Jordan Halverson, 60's futuristic. Halverson's dresses are what the star trek heroines might wear to play tennis. They were short, movable and made of stretch fabrics. He made the mistake of overshadowing his line with his own outfit. Why didn't you put that in the show?

There were several more lines but we chose the most memorable (good or bad). Overall we had fun and give our best wishes to the program and students.

During a calm dinner at Atlantic, SLCpomp ran into 1 half of Coal Umbrella. Remember Coal Umbrella the fantastic vintage store in Provo and Brinton J who is a part of the local music scene here in SLC.

Brinton, Maht, Liz
All three members of this super group have their own individual style that shines through even in this bad lighting.

Maht
Is wearing a striped polo in red with a fur trimmed coat. When you own one of the best stores in the state, finding good clothes is a given.

Liz
This is probably one of the cutest photos we have ever taken. Look at that little smile! Liz is rocking the oversized shirt with tight black jeans and a members only jacket. She accents her look with a fun scarf and versatile brown boots.

Brinton
Brinton is a member of several local bands, specifically Devils Whale that has its CD release the 19th at Palladium. He is only wearing a couple items; classic blue jeans, good shoes and a beanie. These common items are brought together and made truly significant with the pairing of his knitted sweater. Everything fits well and looks as though they were made specifically for him. The person who made that sweater must have been channeling Brinton that day.

If you're lucky you may see some of Coal Umbrella's choice pieces at this seasons Fashion Stroll, April 25th.

ROUND 2

Hey, remember that time M.E.T and her siblings had a sew off for barbies. Well here's round 2. This time we asked around for themes and placed the ideas in a box. Then teams of two drew their fate. Thank You to the brain stormers, here are the results of your ideas.

Dance Battle Wear.
We made a two look outfit. First you have the warm up that is made of fine dupoint silk in gold. Underneath you have movable, breathable somewhat urban but cute dance wear.

Gothic Barbie
This outfit has three looks. It goes from Mild, Regular to Intense - just like Hot sauce. We created layers that adjust depending on mood. We made it out of black velvet and sheer material.

Classy Reception
This dress is made out of Navy Blue satin with white accents. It is tasteful but with a little sexy class. Doesn't everyone need and love that combination?

Costume, Forest Royalty
We made a Forest Nymph. It was supposed to be over the top and dramatic. We made a wire hoop for the skirt and a veil to add UMPH. The colors are supposed to be like forest camouflage.

Now, that you have seen the photos and read a little bit about each design, take a moment to vote. It is important we take this very seriously. The last winner got a lot of brocade fabric as a prize.

ALSO. look out for ROUND 3, April 25th Fashion Stroll. Thats right our next competition will be REAL people clothes and will be part of this season's runway for Fashion Stroll. Our theme revolves around different regions of our fine state. Ogden, Washington County, SLC Suburb and Utah County.

Donna is an Educated, Classy lady. Doesn't it just shine through? She is the assistant Curator at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. She is wearing a dress that she bought at Dillard's during a dress emergency. The dress is made of a polyester that is easy to wash but still elegant.

"It's sort of retro, even though it's new."

Donna is going to play the "retro" card this season. Which seems to be a good choice in this here market. The shoes also have some past life flair. She purchased them at Nordstrom. Her favorite store to shop at is Decades, I think we can all agree to that.

"I just like to wear what I like. I don't care what brand it is or where I bought it. I just care if it looks good and I like it."

The Ballad of a Thin Man

Travis wore a early 60s suit to the Frosty Darling Birthday Party a couple of weeks ago. He looks like he could of walked out of a golden-age John Waters movie.

The attention to detail here is admirable. Vintage wingtips and an old Martinizing card really bring it together as a unified look. I also like the tiny blue accent on Travis's bowtie.

Sometimes a person is unable to buy that little clothing item that they want. In circumstances like these, we crafty people must make it ourselves. You'll need fabric and a pattern. If you're in the market for fabric why not turn to the best fabric store in town: Fashion Affair. Located on 3300 South and 2828 East.

Vintage Kimono scraps

They carry a large selection of trimming and accesories to top off any outfit.

Fashion Affair also carries cultural patterns for kimonos and kilts. Along with patterns they also carry fabric for kimonos and scraps of vintage kimonos.

They have an entire room dedicated to bridal fabrics and is the only place where some types of satins and silks are found in the state.

Another Day at the Smiths Market Place

Recently T.I.N and I decided that Smiths Market Place is Salt Lake City's fashion capitol. When we go to clubs, parties and shows we see some good photo worthy people but never the amount we see at the SMP. So here is our newest find.

Kalie and Haley are originally from Provo.

Kalie's dress is from a San Francisco thrift store. Her Moccasins are from Moab, UT. Her belt is from D.I. Kalie buys most of her clothing from D.I. Kalie is a big believer of "Belt Magic". Do belts improve almost any and every outfit? She is excited to wear dresses without tights this spring.

Haley's common garb is skirt-tights-boots. For some odd reason as soon as I saw her I couldn't get the song tainted love out of my head. Was it the glasses? Her clothes are a collection of second hand store finds. She is excited to wear her boots without tights and sleeveless shirts. Haley recently moved to SLC from Provo, what a great add.

Becca is the managing editor of The Daily Utah Chronicle, but in her spare time she is one kick-ass ebay user. Her collection of dresses is stunning. This red polyester piece has a great little built-in belt. She also gets a double bonus for her chain link tights. They came from our favorite store, Smith's Marketplace (although I still think of it as Fred Meyer).

This week I had the pleasure of attending UVU's Celebracion Latino Americana, La Puerta al Exito. This presentation was a scholarship awards ceremony for Latin American students.

Marta was one of the entertainers of the evening. She is part of the dance troop Raizez De Mi Tierra. This particular costume is for an A Capella dance that originates from Veracruz, Mexico. In the performance there is no accompanying music, the only sound heard is the dancers heels on the floor. Marta made her costume by herself. Each member makes their own costumes for the performances.

As far as dance costumes go it is very subtle, color-wise, but lovely. Its simplicity is persuasive and very different from everyday fashion. An element of her outfit that can be used outside the dance floor is the flowers in her hair. It's spring, so lets give it a real welcome and wear flowers in our hair! All her items can be down played for a more daily use style. Remember that concept.

I Drink by the Jug, COAL UMBRELLA

Just down the way from MODE, Coal Umbrella is tucked in an upper floor.

This top floor space was completely renovated by the owners of Coal Umbrella. They scraped layers of wallpaper and flooring to reveal the original elements. Coal Umbrella is essentially a second hand store that also carries some vinyl albums and other treats.

Each room in Coal Umbrella has a theme and its own customized look. When we visited we were overwhelmed with selection. They have vintage dresses, leather jackets and tapestry bags. They also carry a couple surprises in the way of a bath tub full of old sewing patterns, glass bottles of Soda, and so many western shirts one would die of western shirt bliss.

Coal Umbrella is part of the Provo Gallery Stroll and hosts an artist every month. They also carry clothing from local Provo artists.

This is definitely worth checking out. Coal Umbrella is probably in my top 5 favorite stores in all of UTAH.

Along with finding a lot of cute clothes in Coal Umbrella we also found Kaylie.

Kaylie is a student at BYU but has yet to declared a major. She is a big dress/skirt fan. Her dress in this photo is from Platos Closet and only put her back $10. Her undershirt was purchased in Athens, Georgia at Angora's Closet (Always someone else's closet.) Her grandmother made the vest. The entire outfit exudes a carefree, fun attitude. I enjoy all the prints on top of each other that make a complex texture.

This was Kaylie's second trip to Coal Umbrella. She was purchasing a tennis dress and a floral jacket. Her spring outfit will consist of lightweight . . . DRESSES!

If you haven't heard yet, the former Redemption Department has become Disorderly House. It's an interesting combination of installation art and clothing. Each month, a new artist creates an installation to display the clothes.

It's nothing like the standard Forever 21 pile o'clothes—only one of each item is displayed while the stock is hidden in back.

Disorderly House has some cool brands that Salt Lake hasn't seen before, too. Right now they have Creep Streets (check that cool Popeye shirt in the foreground), Rebel 8 and Good Society. Disorderly House is looking to become Salt Lake's premier fair trade and recycled clothing store. Soon they'll be selling Adbusters' Black Spot sneakers and boots!

Provo, seriously. WHAT! What?

I have gone my whole life with a set-in-stone stereotype about you and your residents. With one little 2 hour trip my stereotype has been terminated. Here are some reasons why:

MODE is a little store located on 45 N. University Ave. We discovered it by accident last year when a trip to an Ephraim art gallery was stopped due to awful snow and we had to stop in Provo. Mode has a monopoly on some of the best brands. It's the only place you can buy Nudie jeans in the state. They also carry Spickwak jackets and recently got a new shipment of Gentle Fawn for spring.

MODE also has a t-shirt bar, where one could make customized T's.

For a boutique MODE is reasonably priced and has excellent sales.

MODE. Worth a trip to Provo.

Katie works at MODE. She describes her style as more on the Artsy, Edgey side. She purchases a lot of her clothing from MODE and enjoys the styles that come through the store. Katie is a student at BYU and is studying psychology. She is also a musician and plays folk guitar.

Isabelle is a friend of SLCpomp. At every event she attends, Isabelle is always immaculate. Her philosophy on buying clothing is, if it has character and is tasteful, go for it. Isabelle thinks that older clothes usually have more character and therefore prefers to purchase close of a the vintage variety.

"Its not that I only buy vintage and am against new clothing, I am just more attracted to older styles and genres. There are so few New Fashions I like."

Part of being a Fashionista for Isabelle is also creating her own clothing.

"God, I love to sew!"

She makes bags, aprons, tunics, pants and dresses. Her favorite thing to make is dresses and she has become an expert at that. She mostly sews because she enjoys it but also because sometimes what she imagines herself wearing is unattainable unless she makes it herself.

" Right now I am making my own underwear [Woo!] because I hate paying so much for cute underwear and then it just falls apart."

For the Spring/Summer Season Isabelle plans to wear lots of dresses, tunics and cut-offs. She also would like to wear loads of hats. Isabelle forecasts that temp tatts are going to be the shit this Summer.

Isabelle has graced SLCpomp on two separate occasions. She will be our first featured person. Her post goes up next week but we are so excited that we are going to leak at least one outfit (yes there is more then one!)

This dress is fantastic! And I will tell you why. First of all it is ginger brown with a fun child like print. Second, the dress is flattering to her slim proportion. It has succeeded in not crossing that fine line between tight enough and not too tight. Lastly this dress is great because its an original. Isabelle made it herself.

I meet you at the Lowell Bennion Center Anniversary. I seem to have something for women in purple, and you sure hit the spot. You wore a lavender suit, with a deep purple vest. You had a very sweet demeanor that was enhanced by your confession that you are hard of hearing. I didn't get the chance to speak to you due to your hearing issues, but what you did communicate is that you didn't try too hard at looking cute; it just happened. I liked the added class that the pearl necklace gave to your outfit.

Last week SLCpomp traveled to Orem to view this years Banff Film Festival, which shows all sorts of tough outdoors films. My initial goal was to catch some daily use of outdoor wear. Instead I found a different treat:

Hilary and Pak are both students at UVSC (Is it UVU yet?)

Hilary is an Orem native, and a fine arts major. She says she doesn't think too much about clothes or style — it just happens. In this photo, she is wearing a flannel gray shirt pair with a read pencil skirt. Hilary raises her score by wearing floral print tights and brown flats. Her hair is in a graceful up-do. She has a very classic soft look that are brought to light by her fair skin, hair and tights. But the outfit packs a double whammy with the typically tough plaid. Soft and Hard.

Pak is originally from Japan and is unsure of what he wants to study. He is studying physical ducation, I think he would be the COOLEST gym teacher ever! His outfit is very dark; the brightest point is the white on his hoodie. His shoes ae practical but are cute in brown suede. For the spring, Pak is looking for t-shirts that have graphics of flowers on them.

Jared also attended last week's Magna Pub Crawl. Here he was buying a hot dog at the Veterans of Foreign Wars bar. It's tough to get in the way of someone and their food but his suit begged for attention. Jared (possibly not his real name) is wearing a suit from the 70s. He bought the suit over 10 years ago at a SLC thrift store, he is not sure which one.

"I wore this suit to bring some dignity and class to this crowd and Pub Crawl," Jared said.

The suit has fine yellow-patterned trim around the pockets for an added "HEY LOOK AT ME!" effect. He paired the suit with a button up shirt that has a large collar. Lastly, Jared is sported a spiked troll doll hair-do that actually looks good. Best wishes! We hope you have a easier time getting the dive-bar smell out of your clothes than we did!

This weekend the 6th annual Magna Pub Crawl graced the SLC suburb. The pub crawlers visited 4 bars located on the main drag of downtown Magna. To honor the location many attendees did their best to dress like natives.

Patrick (one of the organizers) says that for such events you have to wear your pearl snap shirt and Carhartt overalls. The rosiness of his cheeks added a little country comfort to the get-up. Patrick told us that the Magna Pub Crawl began on one Valentine's when he and his friend Ben Miller decided that they needed a little excitement for the holiday. In this outfit Patrick could either be leading the crowd in a long Irish drinking song or dancing with some fine ladies. His duds can be found at A.A. Callister on Redwood Rd.

On cold winter nights, we find ourselves at Fred Meyer (technically Smith's Marketplace now) more and more often. There is something comforting about its gigantic candy aisle and bright fluorescent lights that make it seem like the best thing to do when it's chilly and you're low on cash.

The other customers are just a bonus. Carmen and Jason were buying groceries for their hotel rooms while they were in town performing with... Riverdance! I've never seen Riverdance, but I've heard a lot of jokes about it. Clearly, its perfomers are attractive.

Carmen, from Spain, wore a cozy Alpaca wool sweater. She said that she wanted to be back in Spain in time for spring to get new clothes.

Jason, from the Bronx, wore a camel hair coat with a suede cummerbund. He said that he wanted to look good for the airport, and that he wanted to wear slim-fitting, colorful flat-front pants this spring. Salt Lake residents should take note of Jason's advice – he clearly knows what he's talking about!

I thought Jason's shoes were great, but I hope he has a different pair for snowy days like today. As for Carmen, well, she's set to look good and stay warm.

This morning the snow was falling; the snowflakes were HUGE and fluffy. This is what SLC inhabitants dealt with this morning as we decided what to wear. For me, this meant settling for pants. For Abby, it was a regular day of color and comfort. She chose a hat that she knitted and pants that her sister made. She is a ceramics/ art major at the U her accessories include a toolbox full of painting supplies, a board, and a yoga mat. Her motto is "Wear what you want". Sounds easy enough, especially when you see how at ease she is even during a mild snowstorm. Abby is in her element and enjoys cool weather to warm.

P.S. She was listening to Iron & Wine on her iPod when I caught up to her. I'm always so curious about what others are listening to. Now you know.

Sabrina knows how to layer. She found her plaid trenchcoat at Nordstrom Rack last summer. I like the way her dress peeks out from the bottom and the red beads under her scarf. Man, Im just so Disconnected.

Sunday afternoons are a time of resting and playing for my siblings and myself. As of late, the playing has become more of a small competition. We have begun a weekly "Sew Off" and in these competitions we sew outfits for our models (Barbies). At the end of the challenge we then have a judging round. The only problem is that our parents are very insufficient as judges. My mother thinks they are all great and my dad only understands t-shirts and jeans. SO solve our dilemma and vote for your favorite outfit.

The Challenge "Make a outfit that describes you as a designer", (Project Runway Challenge)

Contestant #1

I wanted this outfit to be something hip as well as functional. It consists of a fitted top in turquoise and a short skirt cut in funky ways. I also made a black hoodie that matches the skirt. I also like using soft comfortable fabric.

Contestant #2

As a Designer I am very interested in geometry and creating shapes within the patterns which is the reason why I had the corset and bolero jacket create a triangle. Also I used a piece of fabric for the skirt that already had a design and sewed it to create a mirroring 90degree triangle on the front and back.

Contestant #3

For this challenge I made a modern flapper dress. It has the usual cut at the mid thigh, where the fringe begins. It is loose in the classic flapper way but I added a modern bunching along the sides. I also made tights, vest and added a head band. Altogether the outfit looks very 60's, I wanted a look that included many genres to make something modern and interesting.

Contestants #4

I like to make corsets, because I find that they accentuate any women's body. I like the colors together and I like to create a more classic look than something way crazy. It isn't something too vibrant, I like cool and relaxing colors.

Celebrate My Escape.

After a dinner of sushi, Liz and Trevor decided to go to the Smiths Marketplace and pick up a couple household essentials. It was a quiet weekend for them but their attire was far from quiet.

Trevor is wearing a jacket that is a Matrix reproduction and the rest of his clothing is from the brand Lip Service, which can be purchased at Arsenic Clothing, 1103 S State, SLC. Liz is wearing a black silk dress that is a Asian inspired reproduction. What is really amazing about her outfit is the bad ass corset. When we saw the corset we knew we HAD to take their photo. Liz is wearing a corset in mint green with detail in dark green and yellow. Their clothes are all dark grays and black, and then it all pops with the green corset. The next thing Liz wants to get is real leather boots, which is a definite "save up for" item.

In need of a mild adventure, SLC pomp ventured north on Saturday to Smith & Edwards which is just off the freeway sometime after Odgen. Their billboards say things like "Holy Cow! What a store!" and "We have anything you want... if you can find it." Smith & Edwards is the anti-IKEA.

The store describes itself as surplus-plus, so they sell a wide variety of stuff that military was throwing away AND new saddles, hunting gear, hardware, cheap candy, and home decor.

The surplus section was my favorite part. These bags were only $4.99! With prices like these within a 30 minute drive, there is no reason to buy overpriced G Star Raw clothes ever again.

Though they aren't likely to impress anyone at the Bang & Olufsen store, these headphones will help anyone looking to further blur the line between hipsters and crazy homeless people. Your Iron & Wine mp3s will sound even more weepy-whispery coming through used army earpieces. I suggest a once-over with rubbing alcohol before putting them on your actual ears.

And of course, Smith & Edwards has amazing hats, from fur and leather pilots' hats to multicolored straw cowboy hats. I picked up a railroad engineer's hat, upon which I placed my dad's old steelworker's union button. It makes me feel tough.

These two girls were catching a train heading South. Although High School was such a long time ago and I never had any school spirit, I feel some sort of camaraderie with these girls since we went/go to the same school. Maybe in another life we could have been one another? I would wear fitted jeans (pants in general) and vans shoes. Perhaps back then I would live by the fashion principles that clothes have to be suitable to skate in. Loose enough, tight enough, warm enough, cool enough. In both their outfits I enjoy the little spots of color. Kerri has purple patterned gloves which are really adorable as well as effective in the wind. Jenny on the other hand has a very classic studded belt peeking out of her coat worn w the buckle to the side.

We met Stevie while we were waiting for a table at the Red Iguana on Friday night. Stevie was in town from the Boston area for Utah's purportedly magnificent skiing. Though he said he didn't feel like he was dressed as well as he would like, I thought his casual layers were both functional and interesting. The big coat is Stevie's dad's, and goes great with his super-cheap mail-order glasses from Hong Kong. Stevie's outfit reminded me of Bill Haverchuck from Freaks and Geeks in the best possible way. Plus, he's got great taste in restaurants.

Girls I do Adore.

I recently took my first trip to Tooele, UT. I have lived in this state my entire life but I've never traveled to the mysterious land of Tooele. I decided to check the place out and thought my best chance for a photo would be the D.I. I was wandering through the women's section when I saw her. The women I beheld was a one item knock out. You know when one item makes the whole outfit, like BAM!

IDA is wearing a bronze leather trench coat. She has it gently tied around her frame. This jacket is classic. It can be worn indoors or in mild weather as well as in the cold winter.

Here is our conversation. It was in both Spanish and English but I've translated it to English.

M.E.T. – Oh, Hi. I love your jacket you look really good in it. I run a fashion blog and I was wondering if I could take your photo?

IDA – Oh you like my jacket? Do you want it?

Husband – Yea, let her have it.

M.E.T – No, no umm.. No I just want to take your photo. Is that ok?

IDA – Of course.

M.E.T. – So, where did you get your jacket?

IDA – Here, I buy everything here I have so many crazy clothes that I bought here.

M.E.T – What are you looking for today?

IDA – Braziers, I found this nice black one.

Husband – You better just come to the house.

IDA – Have you had lunch yet? You should just come over.

M.E.T. – Oh … Well I'm actually working right now but that's very nice. I can email you those pictures.

IDA – We don't have a computer. Can you just mail those? Are you sure you don't want to come over?

M.E.T – I don't think I can, but I will mail them to you.

Tonight Might be the Right Start.

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of accompanying a friend (Cris) on a shopping hunt. The hunt was this; Cris was preparing to attend 3 weddings in the next few months. She needed to find 2 outfits for the events that were dressy but still comfortable, w a causal feel. The following is a review of a couple choice women’s stores. Between these 3 stores just about any type of women would be pleased.

Glide Deluxe

Glide Deluxe, specializes in fancy/formal attire. They have a large selection of prom dresses and special occasion garb. Glide Deluxe is also surprisingly affordable. Cris and I guessed the price of a dress. Our estimates were between $100 & $200. The dress turned out to be $30! Now that’s just an extreme example but most of the dresses seem to be a reasonable price, a price you wont feel silly spending on a dress. This store is perfect if it’s a really fancy wedding.

Glide Deluxe carries an assortment of special occasion gloves. So if you’re looking for those specific gloves to match THE dress, you may want to check them out.

Whimsy

Now for something completely different.

Whimsy is located on 2000 e 2700 s in the Country Club Marketplace. Whimsy boutique holds everything from casual everyday wear to dressy wear. They have many brands and styles that won’t be found anywhere else in the valley. Whimsy is a boutique and although it is a reasonably priced boutique, boutique’s on average cost a little more than any chain store. In this case I think the added price is worth it, especially if you think money is time. You would have spent a lot more time trying to look this cute without them. Good for a nice casual wedding, but also for everyday wear.

Add Bonus.

Whimsy has a large stock of undershirts / tank tops in many colors that might be just what you’re looking for to match up with a see-through top, cardigan, etc. Also Whimsy has a stash of fun tights.

Name Droppers
Name Droppers is a local consignment store that carries gently used items from top labels. Think of Name Droppers as a classy thrift store. The clothes are used but they have Diane Von Furstenburg’s name on it! If you are really into top designers but also have bills bills bills, this may be the best way for you to like your clothes and also be on good terms with your land lord. This store has loads of stuff ranging from fancy to comfort wear to wedding.

Added Bonus,
Men’s section, yes they have one. If your significant other, chaperone, brother, male friend, etc. Complains about having to tag along to places that don’t even have men’s clothing this will shush them right up.

Don’t forget Nordstrom Rack, or if you have time and little cash always take a look at your local D.I.

We've admitted that we're a little elitist sometimes, so it should come as no surprise to our readers that both of SLC pomp's writers turned up their noses when Urban Outfitters came to Salt Lake last year. I must confess that I was enamored with the store after spending some time in Seattle during high school, but as my taste matured, Urban Outfitters began to carry a bitterness similar to red food coloring. I knew I was too good for Urban Outfitters. All their clothes were overpriced or poorly made, and even if I did find something I wanted, I could be fairly certain that it would show up at Nordstrom Rack 3 months later.

But writing about street fashion has a way of humbling me. When we asked our dear friend Nicole, where she got her beautiful magenta scarf and purple shirt, she told us that it was from the store where you can buy hipness. I won't be shopping there for myself anytime soon, but I do like what she's done with it. She even chose an Italian soda to match:

Terror Since The Public School Era.

I see Taki on the train a couple times a week. I’ve always wanted to
take a photo because he is always stylish and finally had the chance
this week. Taki is a foreign exchange student from Japan. He has been
living in the U.S. for 5 years, but when he arrived here he didn’t
bring very many clothes with him. He is really creative with layers
and mixing and matching. Taki’s clothes are all from Japan. He said
his philosophy for shopping is “if its cheap, [he] buys it,” but he
also doesn’t mind spending a little extra on jeans. Jeans are Taki’s
fashion obsession -- he feels like he can never have enough. He said
his next new jeans may be a pair of True Religions (to each his own).

Taki’s outfit has a very urban feel, he has the hat and the print
hoodie and the fly sneakers. The added bonus to this outfit is the
curious leather pouch on his hip. He uses it to carry things he
doesn’t want to lose.

P.S. I recently went to Ogden and looked around for kids to

Magic Moments

Once upon a time, in the magic land of Idaho, there lived a little girl who was ordinary in every way except she owned the most magical skates to ever grace the world. Her skates were pale blue with fur trim, and for added twinkle the skates also jingled with bells attached to the laces. Now, unknown to this little girl, there was another girl who not only noticed the skates but forever coveted them. So much so that she turned it into a bedtime story she would tell her children.
Last year the little girl who coveted the skates received a pair that was exactly like those previously described.

Peggy and Olive, are wearing lovely skates with added spice (snowflakes & bells). They were enjoying their skates at the Galivian skating ring last Friday. This post may spark many more little girls to covet the skates.

Back to School

Tuyet wore relatively safe clothes for her first day back at the University of Utah on Monday. The skirt and shirt are both from the generally respectable (but often forgettable) Express, but she took some risks that really paid off. Her white hair ribbons and white tights looked great with the snow that had blanketed campus and I think that the pigtail braids were really cute and playful.

SLCpomp has a lot of dislikes that are sometimes, well, irrational. Sometimes I think we just like to hate things. For instance, I have a problem with black and brown in the same outfit. I feel that they are far to close in the color wheel to go together. Ashley here is proving me wrong by hitting me with a counter-fashion law. Coats/Jackets can be whatever color as long as they serve a purpose.
Ashley wore an all tan under layer with tan corduroy and a textured scarf. She purchased her attire from several chain stores in our valley she was able to find diamonds in the rough of a lot of stores that I would have normally written off. She paired the tan with a black bag and a black coat that has a fur trim around the hood. Truly, it was the perfect outfit for hanging out at the bakery on a cold day with good friends. I also noted that she sports short white-blonde hair that has a secret fleck of copper. I don't really care for a lot of hair dying but I can admit that she really pulls it off.
P.S. I believe that two contradicting colors on a print is totally acceptable.

Yoshi celebrated New Years' with a smart dark outfit. His gray and black gingham sweater vest came from his dear Japan, but the tie is a good ol' JCPenny classic via the D.I. I usually dislike black dress shirts - I think they seem like the uniform for people who want to be edgy without taking any risks – but Yoshi wore his with confidence and style. I was also excited when I realized that Yoshi and I were wearing the same black, slim-fitting UNIQLO jeans, although he got his in Tokyo while mine came from a trip to New York last year. I love these jeans so much that I'm considering another trip to NYC to replenish my supply.

I also got a photo of Isabelle, who is now an SLC pomp repeat offender. Seriously – who could resist a zebra dress with yellow tights? Not me.

When the bells all ring and the horns all blow

We caught Rebecca at a pre-New Years' party on Saturday. Rebecca was prepared for the evening's heavy snow with a wonderfully simple long coat. "I have a coat obsession," admitted Rebecca. SLC pomp has a little coat obsession, too, but only because it's so exciting when you see someone who breaks out of the winter monotony with an interesting, non-frumpy one.

Rebecca said she cuts her own hair, too. She's done a great job with a 60s French New Wave look. She also said that her 2008 fashion New Years' resolution is to find a good pair of slim-fitting, non-corduroy khakis to wear at work. I suggested that she look for some from Trovata, but from their always cryptic website, it looks like they do not have any women's khakis in their current collection. If you see Rebecca working at Squatter's in Park City, maybe you can give her a khaki-tip as generous as your dinner tip.

Dear Readers,

The SLCpomp team hopes all of you had a good Christmas and that you will enjoy the rest of the holiday season. With the coming New Year SLCpomp is going to make more changes. We have five New Years Resolutions for 2008.

SLCpomp’s New Years Resolutions, 2008

1. In 08, SLCpomp will heavily campaign against Uggs, Crocs, flip flops and other comfortable-but-hideous footwear. They may be ok for the beach or nurses, but daily wear is a major sin.

2. Not only will we ridicule gauche fashions, we’ll also provide guide and articles to help correct the problems. Our ideas include: outfits for under $100, store profiles, and in-depth interviews with some of our frequently found models.

3. SLCpomp will also try to capture more of the urban, goth, international, and many other scenes that exist in this state. (If you feel your scene is missing, change that by inviting us to an event.)

4. SLCpomp promises to give you at least two posts a week. We want to run this blog in a way that is sustainable and constant and we are trying to maintain that.

5. In 08, SLCpomp wants FEEDBACK! We want your honest opinion and we want to interact with the rest of SLC tell us what we are missing, what you want to see and what you like. We took over SLCpomp because we felt like it was a worthwhile site and that it was something the community needs and we can only know its effect with your input.

6. We’ve got downtown Salt Lake covered, but SLCpomp would like to extend to other cities like, Provo, Ogden, and St. George by adding to our staff. We are looking for a columnist and two fashion photographers. I remember an old fashioned tree

Orange coats are my favorite this year. We encountered Ali way back on December 3, but she's made her way out of the slc POMP backlog for our Christmas Eve post. She said she got the coat out of a box of clothes that a thrift store was going to throw away. Ali has a great eye - the coat is a gem with round pockets and a good ol' faux fur collar. Normally I don't go for hats with ears, but hers is nice and subtle.

I hope you all have a beautiful Christmas Eve (I'll be spending mine with a big can of Tecate after I come home from my parents' house) and I hope that you'll take pictures of all the amazing clothes you receive and post them to our flickr group.

Shazzam You're Glamorous!

Kate is one of my co-workers. Every workday I await her arrival and candid comments. She is the resident green connoisseur and wears a different shade almost everyday. This particular day she is wearing a tan corduroy hat that she made after sorting through a mass of 20’s garments. The necklace is made of turquoise beads as arranged by Kate, the matching earrings made (w love) by her daughter. The sweater is from the Peruvian Connection Catalog, which Kate rewarded herself with after she was hired. The sweater is a mix of design and color. It ties together the tan 20’s style hat, the turquoise and the tan pants and shoes. I enjoyed this outfit due to its handmade nature and overall compatibility.

Tunnel Vision

Aliezah is an L.A. native, big surprise. She has all the items one needs for a cold day: a jacket, a hat, and good shoes; but each object has a thought out color or shape. Her jacket was bought at a thrift store and the hat in Pennsylvania (or another place starting w a P). Her entire outfit consists of cold colors that match this particular rainy SLC day. But like a little treat after dinner, she has a rhinestone hello kitty necklace that peaks out bringing a carefree sentiment to the outfit.

p.s. Did you locals know that Utah has many good thrift stores? In other states and cities prices would be double for the same items found here, so take advantage of our hidden gems.

Fancy Free and Free for Anything Fancy

I met Christina and Guy at a party a couple of weeks ago. These Black Chandelier-ers stood out from the crowd with their highly personalized style. I particularly liked Guy's shoes, a fading pair of Pumas that he had fixed up with a can of gold spray paint:

Notice the green sole slightly showing through on the toe.

Although I somehow forgot her name, this girl had one of the best black/brown combinations I have seen in quite some time. The pattern on her shirt blended with the texture of her green scarf to make an inspired match. Mystery girl, please leave your name in the comments if you read this!

Subtle Fanfair

I've been on the hunt for an example of good winter-wear ever since the snow hit. The task has proved much more difficult than I could ever imagine. The thing is, it is very difficult to translate one's style to useful layers. Ladies always want to look cute but we sacrifice looks for warmth and convenience. Attractive winter-wear is somewhat expensive and no one wants to wear the same thing every day.

After a long hard search, I finally hit gold. Emily easily stood out from the crowd; she wore a practical long gray coat with fur (real?) trimming around her hood. Under her jacket she had a little surprise consisting of an aqua t-shirt. The crowning piece of the outfit – what made it from average-good to photo-worthy – was the pairing this practical attire with yellow plaid pants. Emily is a good winter fashion example because of her use of colors, patterns, and common sense. When I asked where she bought her pieces Emily revealed that she's originally from France. The pants are from Zara and the Jacket from Morgan, which are both stores found in France.

Transplants to Utah seem to be a recurring theme in our photos. Utah locals need to step it up a notch.

Have you been to the Latino Mall on 2500 South and Redwood Road yet? If not you’re so missing out food-wise, music-wise, culture-wise, and style-wise. The Vaqueros De Leon is situated inside the Latino mall, it specializes it Mexican cowboy attire. We highly suggest the boots (available in almost any color), wallets, and money clips complete with the name of your favorite Mexican state.

Why? Why? WHY hasn't there been a load more written about this store? 10 is one of the stores located in the 9th and 9th neighborhood. 10 specializes in urban wear that our state is honestly lacking. Although a lot of its items are pricey due to its high percentage of style, 10 always has a sale rack jam packed with unbelievable finds in shoes, hats, and shirts. We selected a couple of choice items that anyone would want to receive. Check out the awesome hats and shoes.

Positively 4th Street Music
You really have to give it up to this store, for surviving so many moves and managements changes (remember Orion’s in Sugarhouse? The same people are behind this one). Positively 4th not only has a good selection of CDs but also a great selection of vinyl. Plus, but they sell and repair turntables. Maybe it's time to make those DJ dreams a reality for your basement brother or (what the hell) basement grandparents.

Plus, your dad told me he doesn’t need another F.Y.E gift card.

The snow is snowing; the wind is blowing

As promised, slc POMP was out in full force on Friday for Salt Lake's Holiday Fashion Stroll. It was bitterly cold and snowing hard, but we still managed to find some great outfits on Broadway – the city's current fashion hotspot.

We started our evening at Frosty Darling, where the always impeccably dressed Gentry showed off a beautiful 50s holiday dress:

As we walked around her store, a fashion stroller asked Gentry where she got the thousands of amazing things in her store. She replied that (of course) it's a secret. We will tell you that Frosty Darling is on 200 East and Broadway, and that you should look for it in our upcoming gift guide.

Sonja wore a velvet jacket and leg warmers to compliment her new Wranglers from Black Chandelier. Except the jeans, Sonja and Lisa (see next photo) created all their clothing from old vintage clothes, updated with new cuts and embellishments.

Lisa is the designer behind the clothes at Frosty Darling this winter. She told us that long skirts are definitely due for a comeback, and that her winter clothes philosophy is as simple as "color, texture, warmth."

Henrie's is a drive-through dry cleaner by day and a fashion runway by night. Before the show, we found Tayler, a fashion stroll makeup artist. She had a beautiful orange coat from the Salvation Army and a scarf from the Dancing Crane in Sugarhouse. Tayler advised all makeup-wearing slc POMP readers to know the color wheel and "go with what feels comfortable."

Though not completely original (or O.G.) this hoody from Uprok has some nice details. I always like to see rhinestones look tough. Modeled by some guy from W Talent – can someone remind me why Salt Lake needs modeling so many model agencies?

I was so excited when I saw this outfit from Model Citizen. The plaid is perfect for summer or winter. Unfortunately, Model Citizen's selections fizzeled out fast:

The second model looks like she came from a high school drill team. The third model looks like she got in a fight with a toner cartridge.

Finally, for all your bedroom re-enactments of The Count of Monte Cristo, Spark has a ready-made costume. I love to go to Spark for its unique shoes and mildly offensive underwear, but whenever I see what can only be a coat for gay pimps there, I can't hold back the laughter.

Lovely Ladies of SLC -2

Dear Diane,

I met you last week after a screening of the Darjeeling Limited at the Broadway Theater on 300 South. I looked at all the components of your outfit and decided it was worth going out of my comfort zone to ask you for your photo. You were wearing a long tunic with Egyptian print in the colors orange, purple, and gold, which I would later find out, your daughter bought for you at a garage sale.

You were blessed with lovely almost white hair. It was neatly pinned back framing your face and making you look very wise and knowing. I was glad that I had made the effort to speak to you and that you had made the drive from Ogden to see the same film.

Diane, you identified as a nomad with interest in many cultures including African, Indian, Eastern, and European. I hope that the other ladies of the world follow your style choices and winter philosophy: long skirts and jacket with exotic accessories.

When you walk through the garden

JT was wearing a beautiful silver and gold shirt on Saturday night at what was possibly the most underground party I have ever been to – it was in a cyclist's warehouse. The shirt was from Decades, and it perfectly accents JT's black t-shirt and black jeans. It's masculine with a touch of our beloved Leslie Hall.

At the same party, Devin wore a wonderfully subtle shirt from TJ Maxx. I've often wondered, "Who is this TJ Maxx? How can he (or she) consistently offer such low-low prices on polka dots and ruffles? What is TJ Maxx' real relationship with Ross Dressforless?" slc POMP demands answers. Seriously, I like her shirt enough to mostly ignore those damn Ugg Boots.

Paul and Summer rounded out my fashion search with some amazing holiday vests from Thrift Town. Paul's vest has a schooldays theme, and he's combined it with a Christmas necktie. Summer combined her vest with a lovely embroidered turtleneck. Really, what turtleneck couldn't be improved with some mistletoe on the neck?

Lastly, slc POMP will be walking the streets with our cameras and notebooks on Friday, December 7 for Salt Lake's Holiday Fashion Stroll. We hope we'll see you somewhere on Broadway (300 South) between State Street and 400 East, from 4 to 10 PM.

Huggable Instance

Generally I feel that sports paraphernalia is obnoxious; it seems very loud and in your face. Those words could easily describe something I adore but for some odd reason when I see sports paraphernalia it seems to yell “THIS IS A FAMILY OF JERKS!” Style, as you know, is a very coy and, at times, manic friend of ours. Those items we have pledged to never wear can be permitted for one season or occasion and then just as gracefully can go back to the banned list the next season. There are always instances of good in every tacky or un-classy style genre.

This is Dan’s outfit on Nov, 24th 2007. He is all roaring to go for the annual UofU vs. BYU game. Dan’s apparel begins with a much worn cap with a retired logo and that is alive with 90’s flair.

His sweatshirt has a playful non-intimateding look that even non-sport fans could appreciate. Here we have a softer side to sports apparel. Dan wears his fan attire with simplicity. Each item is worn in to his comfort level and has been loved throughout the years. The colors have slightly faded and the effect makes it so the red doesn’t beat you over the head with pride; instead you can swallow his fan message. Now all he really needs is a fanny pack and he’s set.

Isabelle was shooting pool at the Twilite Lounge on 200 South and 300 East on Monday. Isabelle's outfit really played off the setting well. Her mustard yellow cardigan and pink flowery shirt accented against the blue-green pool table with a subtle, but vivid contrast. I prepared a graphic to demonstrate the genius of this color scheme:

Lovely Ladies of the SLC - 1

I happened upon this lovely lady at the Radcliff Clinic. She is sporting all lavender even down to the rims of her glasses. When asked about her outfit she responded, that it was by coincidence that she was monochromatic. Most of her clothing was given to her by her sister who had sent her the jacket shown 10 years ago. It is my personal belief that old ladies and their magnificent style usually beat out any other age group of women. It's the time in one's life when you get over wanting to please others and you can finally wear all the crazy items collected over the decades and not feel one ounce of guilt over it, or so I hope.

Ryan is a bartender and patron at the X Wife's Place on 700 East and 500 South. When we spoke to him last night he was dressed for what he called "casual saturday," with a sportcoat and slacks from Pib's Exchange, shirt and tie from the Deseret Industries, and a tie clip from Decades. When asked where he got the visor, Ryan said, "Well, I didn't get it in Reno..."

Ryan's getup is perfect for the X Wife's Place, which is one of the cheapest, smokiest, cosy-est bars in town. Some people lovingly refer to the bar as the Wrecked Lives Place, but Ryan is proof-positive that even the dirtiest dives can hold fashion genius. The real four leaf clover preserved in Ryan's tie clip was a great touch:

Allow us to re-introduce ourselves.

Marcela is a woman of many talents. She's hosted RadioActive on KRCL, reported for KUER news, taught art lessons, made films, and now she's set her sights on Salt Lake street fashion. I've known Marcela since the fourth grade, and we've been best-best friends since 2003. She's the most fashionable person I know.

Thomas (me) is a senior at the University of Utah. I carry my camera with me everywhere, and even though people make fun of me for looking like a tourist, it's generally worthwhile. I spend at least 30 percent of my waking hours listening to or thinking about music as I dabble in graphic design, journalism, and running.

We've made some changes to the look of slc POMP to reflect its new management, and we've got a posting schedule that we're pretty proud of. We're also looking to expand the range of people featured here. Hipsters – wonderful as they (we?) are – are just the tip of Salt Lake's fashion iceberg.

We're here because this blog was too good of an idea to let it die. Next time you make a toast, be sure to mention slc POMP's founders, Cait and Frances.

We've come up with a solution to our problem. Holly and I are handing over the reins to our frequent contributors, Marcela and Thomas. These darlings, contacted us yesterday in the hope of keeping something going. They're going to take over and Holly and I will contribute when we can. Essentially, we promoting them and demoting ourselves.

We think this is a great idea. They'll bring some fresh taste to the blog and we'll be able to enjoy looking at the photos they produce. So please, please keep reading. Marcela and Thomas will do an excellent job.

Ah, so we are horrible. I know I said we would post again in October, but here it is weeks from Thanksgiving, and this page looks like Bonanza City before Kid Nation took over [mmm, pop culture].

It's like this: Frances and I have run out of steam on this project. We're finished for now. Maybe we'll come back to S.L.C. Pomp someday, but not now.

Of course, Frances isn't actually named Frances. Her name is Holly Leopardi. She's trying to graduate from high school a year early. She's applying to art schools, and running around with her City of Salt friends. She's recently aquired a pet cat. She's very grown up even if she acts like a snot sometimes. She looks like this:

Meanwhile, I am exploring Los Angeles. Celeb spotting,etc. I'm studying Russian and English Literature at Occidental College and running around the city doing all sorts of amazing things. I work at the college radio station on the promotions staff [and if you're bored one Friday, you can catch me on my radio show from 3-4 pm pacific, i.e. 4-5 s.l.c. time] and write the occasional freelance article. I spend a good portion of my day on Craigslist looking for an apartment, and I'm considering whether to study abroad in Prague next year.

Oh, yes, and my name is Kit Warchol. I look like this:

So you see, no mystery. We're just kids watching You Tube videos with aspirations of who-knows-what. We send each other facebook messages, and go to Panther shows. And we're beginning to grow up and away from Salt Lake. It's the place I go home to for Christmas, but you can't keep a street fashion blog running just on photos taken in the holiday season.

Holly and I have had some awesome times. We never expected this blog to blow up so fast. We haven't even done this for a year. It was just a project for us, and we liked it because it was fun to meet people around town and find out how their minds worked. But we're leaving on a high note. Maybe you'll see us around some day, and maybe we'll follow this up with something bigger and better. For now, though, we're just hangin' out.

It's time for a change. We are currently reorganizing our blog's digs. You'll notice these changes taking place over the next week.

You might have noticed, for example, that we are beginning to watermark our photos. No big deal, but much more professional.

We are also currently trying to find a way to display our photos in a gallery format, rather than forcing you to scroll through all of the entries. How nice would that be? But the truth is, this is looking to be a long, grueling process for Frances and I. We are not big on the website/html age. If any of you readers can help, we'd love to hear from you.

Our goal: one much more adorable looking blog. We'll let you know when we've achieved it.
